About the Sureh Al-Anfal: This Sureh was descended to inform or to teach about about for whom the Booty/Bounty (Bounties) are.
In order to avoid misunderstanding about the term bounty(singular of Bounties) lets look at few meanings & related synonyms to understand it to some extent (a bit more than in general).
Meanings of Booty/Bounty:
Synonyms of the Term Booty: Reward, prize, award, recompense, remuneration, commission, consideration, premium, dividend, bonus, endowment, gratuity, tip, favour, donation, handout, incentive, inducement, purse, winnings, money, informalperk, sweetener, formalperquisite, rareguerdon, meed, lagniappe.
Preamble: Everything (Booty or bounties) in this universe is for you, has been offered to you for your loved ones (Such that you distribute), after you have asked it (for your loved ones), this is only for the satisfaction of your loved ones, the actual benefactor or protector is Allah s.w.t himself.
Brief History: In the battle of Badr ("Battle of Badr is a huge topic Inshahallah will be presented separately) some of the Companions rz of Prophet (ﷺ) did not voted in the favor of this battle, only during the discussion (beware this was a discussion [a sunnah to discuss such that everyone can freely bring up their opinion this is not a means for opposing], when it came to battle everyone of them fought [Al Iman] so don't dare to bring wrong thoughts in our minds).
The Reason for not voting in favor was that non of them thought that there will be a battle (killing someone even if non believer, they were not afraid of themselves), thus they never came prepare means there were not enough weapons with them & they were merely 313 in numbers including kids, elderly and sick people didn't brought enough food for their stay neither had enough means of travel [camels, horses] which had tiered them off, against 1000 organized/recognized warriors fully equipped with weapons & with full means of traveling to save their strength, in reality they were presenting their views to safeguard us (people with less faith) that when such scenario comes you may use it as an exception (Thanks to Allah, his Rasool & His Companions).
For the sake and the pleasure of the Hearts of the companions, prophet (ﷺ) himself prayed to Allah s.w.t (as Quoted in Hadith at the end of the page), there upon the Almighty Allah s.w.t accepted his prayers and helped the companions upon the reference of Prophet (ﷺ) with [group of] 1000 Angels a series (each group following the other). Its in Hadith when the Companions steps towards an enemy they see that the enemy dies out of nothing (just to express, they were killed by Angels but in reality it was Allah s.w.t who was killing enemies, himself).
When the Battle was won, some of the Companions asked about the Booty/Bounties/Rewards to that Allah s.w.t descended these Sureh Al-Anfal.
Interesting Points:1. In Ayat # 1 of this Sureh, when asked Allah s.w.t clearly mentioned that the Booty/Bounties/Rewards are all for Allah s.w.t and his Rasool (ﷺ), as we all knows that Allah s.w.t is (اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ) means he does not need anyone nor needs anything. Which confirm that what Allah s.w.t means is that it is for Rasoolallah (ﷺ), why did he used his name too? such that whenever you see that something is for Allah s.w.t you understand that it is for Rasoolallah (ﷺ) (please do not mix worship with everything else - There is no one worthy of Worship but Allah - لآ اِلَهَ اِلّا اللّهُ )
(اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ) = Allah Almighty is SAMAD which has no accurate translation in English. It means Allah is essential to the existence of everything and that if His support stops for even one second, the whole universe will collapse. Allah is the Eternal and the Absolute Being. Allah has no beginning and He has no end; He is constant. (اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ).
2. As Booty/Bounties/Rewards are something that is paid/offered as additionally out of Goodwill (which is non demand able) after performing some action (after fighting be it with other or with yourself or satan), thus here (in Ayat#1) the moment the companions asked about about this Goodwill/Booty Allah s.w.t clearly mentioned that it is for his Rasool pbuh alone.
3. Only to understand if we ask why? The Companions themselvs mentioned in Aahadith (أحاديث) that before they even raise their swords the enemy dies so only for the sake of understanding as this is too complicated for beginners, The companions did not kill the enemy (may Allah forgive us). please beware and do not misguide that Warriors (Companions) of Badr are not to be praised as they did not do anything, please hold your tongues and thoughts, they have been praised by Almighty Allah s.w.t & his Rasool (ﷺ) himself. (The understanding will come to us from Allah himself, have faith in Allah s.w.t).
4. As in Ayat#9 it was confirmed that the Angels were descended/sent in Groups of 1000s (each group following the other).
(For the purpose of understanding lets investigate why were they descended) Lets just see only two of the reasons.
(1st Reason). Because the prophet (ﷺ) asked for help of his lord, Allah s.w.t answered as "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another." as mentioned in Ayat # 9.
(2nd Reason). This was only as a good news, for the followers/lovers of Rasoolallah (ﷺ) and that there hearts are pleased (gets at ease). As mentioned in Ayat # 10, "And Allah made it not but good tidings and so that your hearts would be assured thereby."
5. However still it was not even the Angels who killed the enemy this is clearly explained in Ayat# 10, that they were merely sent if we closely understand the portion of Ayat # 10 it confirms that help/victory is only from Allah s.w.t see the portion "And help/victory is not but from Allah . Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise".
6. This is in general that all Good is from Allah s.w.t and by Allah s.w.t alone hence it is found in Hadith, when inquired by Aisha rza the Prophet (ﷺ) replied that anyone who enter Paradise (Jannat) will purely due to the Grace of Allah s.w.t, to that she asked my beloved what about you, Prophet pbuh answered, even me too. Do not mix up this with Bad Deeds as we may use the strength of Allah s.w.t in performing any action but he (The Creator of will) authorized us to use our will as we like, it is thus we are accountable for misusing it. (These are complicated yet simple issues, thus to understand them we need to reach the ones who can teach this [bait]).
7. Eventually the Companions were blessed with Help of Angels, (in reality Allah s.w.t himself), Victory, respect, fame, everything else and later even with the Booty/Bounties too.
If we ask Why & then Re-Inspect the scenario the reason is very clear, that's only because the Prophet (ﷺ) asked for help from his lord.
8. How about the Companions then didn't they seek Allah's help, they are dozens of Aahadith () where the Companions seek Allah's s.w.t help even in small matter like if they lost something they seek Allah's help. Then why it is not mentioned here? well Allah s.w.t has offered everything to his beloved Prophet (ﷺ) & allowed him to distribute it, (Ana Qasim wallahu yu ti, I distribute and Allah is the one who offers/gives).
9. To be sure of it and to take the full taste lets see some keywords (Referencing words) where Allah is referring his beloved Rasoolallah (ﷺ) in all the sentences.
For Example:
(1). (إِذْ تَسْتَغِيثُونَ رَبَّكُمْ) here Allah is referring to the Lord of Prophet (ﷺ) (رَبَّكُمْ - not to the Lord of the worlds رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ)
(2). Allah s.w.t Answered TO the prayers of Rasoolallah (ﷺ) FOR Rasoolallah (فَاسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ) (ﷺ).
(3). The word (أَنِّي)is used in the context of After this prayers from you, Now after your have prayed and only now, Those who knows the Arabic knows this better then me.
(4). That your Hearts will be assured thereby (وَلِتَطْمَئِنَّ بِهِ قُلُوبُكُمْ), It was not mentioned that there Hearts were assured, rather it is mentioned your hearts (Teri Nisbat, Because of your Relation).
10. In Ayat# 12. When your Lord Inspired to the angels (إِذْ يُوحِي رَبُّكَ إِلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ), even when the Allah s.w.t was Inspiring the Angels he didn't mention the Lord of Angels rather he used again the realtionship of Rasoolallah (Nisbat-e-Rasool).
It is beyond my ability to explain the concept, in short some one already told this "Yeh sab tumhara karam hai Aaqa (ﷺ) ke baat ab tak bani hui hai" translates to "This is all your grace O Master that everything is fine so far" ().
Whatever was mentioned wrong, kindly correct me & pray that Allah forgives all of our sins.
May Allah excuses/forgives all of our faults Weather Learned, Thought, written, spoken or performed (or any other way), & bless us with the Correct Deen/Iman Ameen Bejahi Taha wa Yaseen, what i mentioned is not fully right you & your beloved Rasoolallah (ﷺ) knows the best.
